I'm new to gardening and there's not a lot of space to plant a garden in a condo
but I make do. Here's info and photos on recent efforts.
11/03:
A long overdue update! Well, the winners
from the spring sampler were the
Snow Crocus,
daffodils (Carlton,
Salome and
Passionale)
and hyacinths of all varieties (Mixed
Dutch Hyacinths,
Blue Grape
Hyacinths and
Wood Hyacinths). Of the tulips, the
Lily Flowering
Tulips gave the best showing - we'll see if they come back
this year before I order more. The
Early Stardrift
barely appeared and I never saw a single representative from the
Lavender
Mountain Lilies.
Here are some photos of
the 2003 spring garden!
(Coming soon: a week-by-week calendar of what appeared when and how long it
lasted (potentially interesting to other Atlanta, Georgia-area
gardeners).)
Mid-summer, I ordered a planted some
red and
white begonias,
a Creeping Phlox
collection and an
Emperor Frederick
Gloxinia. Unfortunately, to say they did poorly would be an
understatement.
For spring 2004, I've once again purchased from
Dutch
Gardens. This selection of 225 bulbs was picked specifically
based on what did well in 2003. The selections include
Snow Crocus,
Mixed Dutch
Hyacinths,
Wood Hyacinths, a variety of Muscari (related to
Blue Grape
Hyacinths) including
Muscari
Latifolium,
Muscari Azureum,
White Muscari and
Mt. Hood Muscari,
a Deluxe Daffodil
Mixture, and a collection of Daffodils for naturalizing
(including
Flower Record,
Juanita,
Salome and
Ice Follies).
2/03:
I planted a
spring collection of 125 bulbs from
Dutch
Gardens late December of 2002. It includes
Snow Crocus,
Carlton
Daffodils, Mixed
Dutch Hyacinths,
Blue Grape
Hyacinths,
Early Stardrift,
Salome Daffodils,
Red Emperor
Tulips,
Passionale Daffodils,
Big Smile
Tulips, Lily
Flowering Tulips,
Wood Hyacinths
and Lavender
Mountain Lilies. The first that have come up are the snow crocuses -
only yellow so far. Here's the
first one that came up last weekend (2/9/03).
