I've come to call the category of sports or activities that I seem to enjoy most "Journeying." In almost all cases, these activities primarily involve covering distance as you are propel yourself through space. 

With few exceptions, these activities allow you to push yourself - to put yourself perhaps a little farther out than you think you should really be and go for that extra effort to get back.  Horseback riding and Dancing are exceptions.

They are also primarily solo activities (while you can do them with a friend, a companion is not required as it is in, say, tennis).  In many of these, I find time to 'zone' or do as much mental work or relaxation as physical. Some of these activities put me in an alert but meditative state, much like motorcycle riding does.
